This highly illustrated publication introduces porcelain Meissen snuffboxes and their history. Meissen was among the first manufacturers to adjust to the high demand for these small treasures, developing a wide range of different models and forms. The fastidious painting of the boxes using the entire repertoire of Meissen motifs was carried out exclusively by the best painters in the manufactory. Today, they provide a more intimate insight into the courtly life of the eighteenth century than almost any other medium. A number of contributions by renowned authors and scholars give an account of current scholarship, with reference to approximately 120 Meissen snuffboxes.
